Intermediate Topic 34 of 51 Web Development
Backend Basics
Server logic handling requests, data and business rules.
How it works
The backend is the part of a web application that runs on servers: it receives requests, applies business logic, talks to databases and other services, enforces authentication and authorization and returns responses. Core concepts are routing, request parsing and validation, data persistence, sessions, background jobs, logging, error handling, configuration and deployment. Backends expose APIs such as REST or GraphQL and can be written in many languages and frameworks.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- A request reaches the server.
- Routing picks the handler.
- The handler validates input and applies business rules.
- It reads or writes the database.
- A response is returned, usually JSON or HTML.
Where it is used
E-commerce checkouts, social feeds, payment processing, notifications and data analysis pipelines run on backends that keep data secure and consistent.
Common pitfall
Trusting client input leads to injection and tampering, so validate and sanitize everything on the server. Blocking operations hurt throughput under load. Missing indexes, N+1 queries and lack of timeouts cause slowness and outages. Poor error handling leaks internals. Design stateless services, log with context and secure secrets outside the code.
