Grover's Algorithm
Quantum search with quadratic speedup.
How it works
Grover's algorithm searches an unstructured collection of N items for one satisfying a condition using about the square root of N queries, versus N for classical search. It starts with an equal superposition, then repeats two steps: an oracle flips the sign of the amplitude of the target, and diffusion reflects all amplitudes about their average, which raises the target's amplitude each round. After roughly pi/4 times the square root of N iterations, measurement finds the answer with high probability. The speedup is quadratic and proven optimal for unstructured search.
Where it is used
It applies to brute-force problems, such as searching keys, solving satisfiability and speeding up some optimization subroutines.
Common pitfall
Doing too many iterations lowers the success probability again, and the oracle itself must be built and run efficiently. It halves effective symmetric key length, so using 256-bit keys keeps security.
