Entanglement
Correlation between qubits stronger than classical.
How it works
Entangled qubits share a state that cannot be described by giving each qubit its own state. The Bell state (state 00 plus state 11, divided by the square root of two) gives perfectly correlated results: measuring one qubit as 0 means the other is 0 as well, whichever distance separates them. Bell's theorem and experiments show these correlations exceed what any local hidden-variable theory can produce, yet they cannot be used to send information faster than light. Entanglement is created by gates such as CNOT after a Hadamard and is a resource for quantum teleportation, superdense coding and quantum algorithms and key distribution.
Where it is used
It underpins quantum speedups, secure communication and sensing.
Common pitfall
Describing entanglement as instant messaging is wrong, and entanglement is easily destroyed by interaction with the environment, called decoherence. Isolate qubits well and verify entanglement with measurements in several bases.
