Beginner Topic 7 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics
Human-Computer Interaction
Studying how people use interfaces.
How it works
Human-computer interaction studies how people use technology and how to design it so they can do their goals effectively and comfortably. It combines psychology, design and engineering. Concepts include mental models, affordances, feedback, error prevention, cognitive load, Fitts's law for pointing, Hick's law for choices and accessibility for people with different abilities. The design process cycles through research, prototyping, testing with users and iteration, and interaction modalities include touch, voice, gesture and augmented and virtual reality.
Where it is used
HCI guides the design of apps, websites, medical devices, cars and games so that they are learnable, efficient and satisfying.
Common pitfall
Designers who assume users think like themselves build confusing products, and skipping testing means problems appear only after launch. Observe real users, test early with cheap prototypes and design for accessibility from the start.
