Beginner Topic 9 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics
UX Research
Methods learning about user needs.
How it works
User experience research gathers evidence about what people need and how they behave. Qualitative methods such as interviews, contextual inquiry, diary studies and usability tests explain why people act as they do, usually with five to eight participants per round, while quantitative methods such as surveys, analytics and A/B tests measure how many and how much. Card sorting informs information architecture, personas and journey maps summarize findings and tools such as the System Usability Scale give comparable scores. Research is planned with clear questions, recruited participants and consent, and results are synthesized into insights and recommendations.
Where it is used
Product teams use it to find problems worth solving, validate designs before building and measure whether changes helped.
Common pitfall
Leading questions, testing only with colleagues and confusing what people say with what they do bias results, and research never acted on is wasted. Ask open questions, observe behavior and share findings widely.
