Advanced Topic 39 of 49 Graphics, Vision & Media
Image Segmentation
Partitioning an image into meaningful regions.
How it works
Image segmentation partitions an image into regions that belong together. Classical methods include thresholding, such as Otsu's method, region growing, watershed, k-means clustering on color, graph cuts and active contours. Deep learning approaches include semantic segmentation, which labels each pixel with a class using networks such as U-Net and DeepLab, instance segmentation, which separates individual objects as in Mask R-CNN, and panoptic segmentation, which combines both. Foundation models such as the Segment Anything Model segment from prompts.
Where it is used
Medical imaging for tumor and organ delineation, autonomous driving scene understanding, satellite land-cover mapping, photo editing for background removal and robotics grasping use segmentation.
Common pitfall
Boundaries are ambiguous, and annotation for pixel-level labels is expensive. Class imbalance, such as small lesions, hurts training, so use Dice or focal losses. Models may fail on domain shift. Evaluating with pixel accuracy alone is misleading; use intersection over union. Use pretrained backbones, augmentation and post-processing, and review errors.
