Object Detection

Locating and classifying objects in images.

How it works

Object detection locates and classifies multiple objects in an image, outputting bounding boxes with class labels and confidence scores. Two-stage detectors such as Faster R-CNN first propose regions and then classify and refine them, offering accuracy; one-stage detectors such as YOLO and SSD predict boxes and classes directly in a single pass, offering speed; and transformer-based detectors such as DETR use attention. Non-maximum suppression removes duplicate boxes, anchors or anchor-free heads define box candidates and accuracy is measured with mean average precision at IoU thresholds.

Where it is used

Self-driving cars, surveillance, retail analytics, industrial inspection, medical imaging, wildlife monitoring and photo tagging use object detection.

Common pitfall

Small, occluded or crowded objects are hard to detect, and performance falls on data unlike the training set. Class imbalance between background and objects needs special losses. The speed-accuracy trade-off affects deployment on edge devices. Thresholds change precision and recall. Use pretrained models, quality annotations and data augmentation, and evaluate on realistic data.

Where it fits in the course
