Inlining
Replacing a call with the function's body.
How it works
Inlining replaces a function call with the body of the called function, eliminating call overhead and, more importantly, exposing the combined code to further optimizations such as constant propagation, dead code elimination and loop transformations across the former call boundary. Compilers decide using heuristics based on function size, call frequency and context, and languages provide hints such as inline, always_inline and Rust's inline attributes. Link-time and profile-guided optimization extend it across files.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- A call has overhead: pass arguments, jump, return.
- The compiler copies the function body into the caller.
- The call disappears.
- Now constants and dead code are visible to the optimizer.
- Too much inlining bloats the code, so there are heuristics.
Where it is used
Small accessors, operators, comparison callbacks in sorting, iterator operations and hot helper functions benefit, and it is a major source of speedup in high-level abstractions.
Common pitfall
Excess inlining increases code size and can overflow the instruction cache, slowing programs. Recursive and virtual functions are harder to inline unless devirtualized. Debugging inlined code is confusing. Changing an inline function triggers wide recompilation. Let the compiler decide mostly and profile before forcing it.
