Loop Optimizations

Unrolling, hoisting and fusion to speed loops.

How it works

Loop optimizations improve code in loops, where programs spend most of their time. Techniques include loop-invariant code motion, hoisting computations out of the loop, strength reduction, replacing multiplication with addition on induction variables, loop unrolling to cut branch overhead, loop fusion and fission, loop interchange to improve cache locality, tiling or blocking, vectorization using SIMD and software pipelining. Dependence analysis determines which transformations are legal.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Code that does not change in the loop, such as a * b, is hoisted outside.
  2. Unrolling repeats the body to reduce loop overhead.
  3. Fusion merges adjacent loops over the same range.
  4. Strength reduction swaps multiplication for addition.
  5. Loops dominate runtime, so these matter most.

Where it is used

Numerical code, image processing, scientific computing and machine-learning kernels rely on them for performance. Polyhedral compilers automate sophisticated transformations.

Common pitfall

Aliasing and unknown function calls prevent optimization, since the compiler cannot prove independence. Over-unrolling bloats code and hurts instruction cache. Changing the order of floating-point operations alters results. Write loops with simple bounds, avoid pointer aliasing with restrict where valid, use the compiler's optimization reports and measure the effect.
