Kolmogorov Complexity
Length of the shortest program producing a string.
How it works
The Kolmogorov complexity of a string is the length of the shortest program, on a fixed universal machine, that outputs it. A string is random if it cannot be compressed much below its own length, while patterned strings like a million zeros have short descriptions. The measure is machine-independent up to an additive constant, by the invariance theorem, but it is uncomputable: no algorithm can calculate it for all strings, which follows from the halting problem.
Where it is used
It provides a rigorous notion of randomness and information, and is used in proofs of lower bounds, in the incompressibility method, in minimum description length for model selection and as the idea behind normalized compression distance for clustering.
Common pitfall
Because it is uncomputable, only upper bounds can be found by actual compressors. Constants hidden by the choice of machine matter for short strings. Do not mistake algorithmic randomness for statistical randomness tests alone. Practical work uses real compressors as approximations and treats results as estimates.
