Beginner Topic 8 of 51 AI & Machine Learning
Linear Regression
Fitting a straight line to predict continuous values.
How it works
Linear regression models a continuous target as a weighted sum of features plus an intercept, y equals w1 x1 plus and so on plus b, and fits the weights by minimizing the sum of squared errors, either with the closed-form normal equation or gradient descent. Coefficients show how much the target changes per unit change in a feature, holding the others fixed. Regularized versions, ridge and lasso, penalize large weights, and polynomial features allow curved relationships.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Data points show a trend.
- The model is a line y = w x + b.
- It chooses w and b to minimize squared error.
- Gradient descent or a formula finds them.
- It predicts y for any new x, and it assumes a roughly linear relation.
Where it is used
Forecasting sales, estimating prices, analyzing experiments, calibrating sensors and serving as a baseline for more complex models use linear regression, valued for interpretability and speed.
Common pitfall
Assumptions such as linearity, independent errors, constant variance and low multicollinearity are often violated, and outliers strongly influence squared error. Extrapolating beyond the training range is unreliable. Correlated features make coefficients unstable. Scale features, inspect residual plots, consider transformations and do not interpret coefficients as causal effects.
