Logistic Regression

Linear model producing class probabilities.

How it works

Logistic regression is a classification model that passes a linear combination of features through the sigmoid function to produce a probability between 0 and 1, then thresholds it, often at 0.5, to choose a class. It is trained by minimizing the log loss, or maximizing likelihood, with gradient-based optimization. Coefficients relate to log-odds, and the multiclass generalization is softmax regression. Decision boundaries are linear in the feature space.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Compute a weighted sum of the features.
  2. Pass it through the sigmoid, which squashes to between 0 and 1.
  3. The output is a class probability.
  4. Threshold at 0.5 to decide the class.
  5. It is a linear classifier trained with log loss.

Where it is used

Medical risk scoring, credit default prediction, click-through-rate estimation, spam filtering and a strong baseline for text classification use logistic regression.

Common pitfall

Despite its name it is a classifier. It assumes a linear decision boundary, so nonlinear patterns need feature engineering. Perfectly separable data makes the coefficients diverge without regularization. Class imbalance biases predictions, so adjust thresholds or weights. Predicted probabilities may be poorly calibrated. Standardize features, add L2 regularization and evaluate with proper metrics beyond accuracy.
