Beginner Topic 6 of 51 Security & Cryptography

Malware Types

Viruses, worms, trojans and ransomware.

How it works

Malware is software designed to harm or take control of systems. Types include viruses that attach to files and spread when executed, worms that replicate over networks, trojans that masquerade as legitimate software, ransomware that encrypts files for payment, spyware and keyloggers that steal information, rootkits that hide deep in the system, botnet agents that join remote-controlled networks, and cryptominers that steal computing power. Delivery uses email attachments, drive-by downloads, malicious apps and infected updates.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. A virus attaches to files and spreads when they run.
  2. A worm spreads by itself over networks.
  3. A trojan pretends to be useful software.
  4. Ransomware encrypts files and demands payment.
  5. Defences: patching, backups, least privilege and antivirus.

Where it is used

Security professionals study malware for detection signatures, behavior analysis and incident response. Antivirus and endpoint detection tools combine signatures, heuristics and behavior monitoring.

Common pitfall

Relying only on signature-based antivirus misses new and obfuscated threats. Users running with administrator rights and unpatched software increase damage. Analysis must happen in isolated sandboxes or virtual machines. Defend with patching, least privilege, backups kept offline, email filtering and user awareness.

Where it fits in the course
