Beginner Topic 7 of 51 Security & Cryptography
Phishing
Deceptive messages tricking users into revealing secrets.
How it works
Phishing is a social-engineering attack in which a message pretends to come from a trusted party to trick victims into revealing credentials, installing malware or sending money. Variants include mass email phishing, spear phishing aimed at specific people, whaling targeting executives, smishing by SMS, vishing by phone and business email compromise. Attackers create urgency with lookalike domains, spoofed senders and fake login pages.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- The attacker sends an email that looks like a bank.
- It creates urgency, click now or lose access.
- The victim clicks a link to a lookalike site.
- They enter their password.
- The attacker takes it, so check the URL and use MFA.
Where it is used
Organizations run awareness training and simulated phishing campaigns, and deploy email filtering, SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication, link scanning and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication.
Common pitfall
Even trained users sometimes click, so technical controls must assume some will succeed. Attackers use AI to write convincing messages, and legitimate links can hide behind redirects. Check the actual domain, do not trust display names, verify unusual requests through another channel and report suspicious messages quickly.
