Morphological Operations

Erosion and dilation on binary images.

How it works

Morphological operations process shapes in binary or grayscale images using a structuring element, a small shape that probes the image. Erosion shrinks foreground regions, removing small objects and thin protrusions; dilation expands them, filling small holes and gaps; opening, erosion followed by dilation, removes noise while keeping shape size; closing, dilation followed by erosion, fills holes; and gradient, top-hat and black-hat highlight boundaries and small features. Hit-or-miss transforms and skeletonization extract structure.

Where it is used

Cleaning segmentation masks, removing noise from scanned documents, optical character recognition preprocessing, counting cells in microscopy, fingerprint thinning and extracting boundaries use morphology.

Common pitfall

The size and shape of the structuring element strongly affect results, and a poor choice removes real features or leaves noise. Operations are not generally inverses of each other. Border handling affects results near edges. Binary thresholding quality limits what morphology can fix. Choose the element to match feature size, and inspect intermediate masks.
