Edge Detection

Finding abrupt intensity changes in images.

How it works

Edge detection finds places in an image where intensity changes sharply, indicating object boundaries. Gradient-based methods convolve the image with derivative kernels such as Sobel and Prewitt to estimate gradient magnitude and direction, while Laplacian methods find zero crossings of the second derivative. The Canny detector is the standard pipeline: Gaussian smoothing, gradient computation, non-maximum suppression to thin edges and hysteresis thresholding with two thresholds to link strong and weak edges.

Where it is used

Preprocessing for shape detection, lane finding in driving, document scanning, medical image analysis and feature extraction use edge detection.

Common pitfall

Noise creates false edges, so smoothing first is vital, though it blurs real edges. Thresholds that work on one image fail on another; tune per dataset or use adaptive thresholds. Edges do not always correspond to object boundaries because of shadows and texture. Edges may be broken, requiring linking. Deep networks now learn edges as part of tasks.

Where it fits in the course
