Advanced Topic 45 of 50 Computer Networks
Network Virtualization
Overlay networks abstracted from physical links.
How it works
Network virtualization creates logical networks independent of the physical infrastructure. Overlay technologies such as VXLAN and GRE encapsulate virtual-network frames inside packets that travel across the underlay, allowing many isolated tenant networks with overlapping address ranges on the same hardware. Virtual switches, routers and firewalls run in software on hypervisors, and network function virtualization replaces dedicated appliances.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Tenants get their own virtual networks.
- Packets are encapsulated, for example with VXLAN.
- They travel across the shared physical network.
- The receiving host unwraps them.
- Tenants stay isolated and can reuse the same IP ranges.
Where it is used
Public and private clouds, multi-tenant data centers, Kubernetes pod networks and lab environments use network virtualization to provision networks in seconds through APIs.
Common pitfall
Encapsulation reduces the effective MTU, causing fragmentation and mysterious failures if not adjusted. Troubleshooting is harder because the logical and physical views differ. Software forwarding adds CPU overhead unless offloaded to smart network cards. Security isolation depends on the correctness of the virtualization layer.
