MPLS

Label-based forwarding technique in carrier networks.

How it works

Multiprotocol Label Switching forwards packets using short labels instead of full IP lookups. At the network edge a label is pushed onto packets, core label-switching routers swap labels along a predetermined label-switched path, and the last router pops the label. Paths are set up with protocols like LDP or RSVP-TE, which enables traffic engineering, fast reroute and virtual private networks that keep customers' traffic separate.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. The ingress router adds a short label to the packet.
  2. Each next router looks only at the label.
  3. It swaps the label and forwards it, with no IP lookup.
  4. The egress router removes the label.
  5. Labels allow traffic engineering and VPNs in carrier networks.

Where it is used

Service providers carry enterprise VPNs, guaranteed-quality services and backbone traffic over MPLS. Large organizations buy MPLS circuits to connect sites.

Common pitfall

It is complex to operate and expensive compared with internet-based connectivity, so many companies move to SD-WAN. Label mismatches or misconfigured paths blackhole traffic. Does not encrypt traffic by default, so sensitive data still needs encryption. Operators must manage label distribution and monitor paths.

Where it fits in the course
