Advanced Topic 45 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Networking Tools

curl, tcpdump and dig for debugging connectivity.

How it works

A small toolkit covers most connectivity problems. ping tests reachability and round-trip time, traceroute shows hops, dig and nslookup query DNS, curl sends HTTP requests and shows headers and timing, ss and netstat list open ports and connections, ip shows addresses and routes, nc connects to arbitrary ports and tcpdump or Wireshark capture and decode packets. openssl s_client inspects TLS certificates. Debugging proceeds layer by layer: name resolution, routing, TCP connection, TLS and finally the application protocol.

Where it is used

Operators use them to find out whether a failure is DNS, a firewall, a closed port, an expired certificate or a slow backend.

Common pitfall

ICMP may be blocked so ping fails on healthy hosts, results differ between machines due to different DNS resolvers and packet captures can expose sensitive data. Test from the affected location and capture only what you need.

Where it fits in the course

Networking Tools is topic 45 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Advanced. It follows Linux Performance Tools. The next topic is Platform Engineering.
