Advanced Topic 44 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Linux Performance Tools
top, strace and perf for diagnosing systems.
How it works
Diagnosing a slow Linux system starts with identifying the constrained resource. top and htop show CPU and memory per process, vmstat and iostat reveal memory, swap and disk activity, free and df show memory and disk usage, and ss lists sockets. strace traces system calls a process makes, ltrace traces library calls and perf samples CPU stacks, which flame graphs turn into pictures of hot code. eBPF-based tools such as bpftrace give low-overhead insight into the kernel. Brendan Gregg's USE method checks utilization, saturation and errors of each resource in turn.
Where it is used
Engineers use them to find a runaway process, a disk bottleneck, a memory leak or a blocking system call in production.
Common pitfall
Reading one metric alone misleads, heavy tracing slows the very process under test and a high load average is not always CPU. Form a hypothesis, measure one thing at a time and compare against a healthy baseline.
