ORDER BY and LIMIT

Sorting results and capping their count.

How it works

ORDER BY sorts the result by one or more expressions, ascending or descending, with tie-breaking by later columns. LIMIT, or TOP and FETCH FIRST in other dialects, restricts the number of rows returned, and OFFSET skips rows for pagination. Without ORDER BY, the database may return rows in any order. An index matching the sort order lets the engine avoid an explicit sort.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. The database collects the matching rows.
  2. ORDER BY sorts them, DESC means largest first.
  3. LIMIT 3 keeps only the first three.
  4. Without ORDER BY the row order is not guaranteed.
  5. Use OFFSET or keyset paging for later pages.

Where it is used

Top-N queries such as the ten latest posts, leaderboards and paginated lists in web applications use these clauses.

Common pitfall

OFFSET pagination gets slower on deep pages because the database must still read and discard skipped rows; keyset pagination, using the last seen key, scales better. LIMIT without ORDER BY returns arbitrary rows. Sorting on unindexed large results uses memory or disk. Ensure the sort is deterministic by adding a unique tiebreaker column.

Where it fits in the course
