Beginner Topic 8 of 51 Databases

SELECT Queries

Statements retrieving data from tables.

How it works

A SELECT statement retrieves data. Its main clauses are SELECT for the columns or expressions, FROM for the tables, WHERE for row filters, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY and LIMIT. Logically it runs in the order FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, SELECT, ORDER BY, LIMIT, which explains why aliases defined in SELECT cannot be used in WHERE. DISTINCT removes duplicate rows, and expressions and functions transform values.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Logical order starts at FROM, picking the table.
  2. WHERE removes rows that do not match.
  3. SELECT chooses and computes the columns.
  4. The result is another table.
  5. Writing SELECT first is only syntax, it runs after FROM and WHERE.

Where it is used

Reports, API endpoints, dashboards, exports and ad hoc investigation all rely on SELECT. Choosing only the columns needed reduces I/O and network traffic.

Common pitfall

SELECT * pulls unneeded data and breaks when the schema changes. Missing WHERE clauses return or process whole tables. Without ORDER BY the row order is not guaranteed. Joining without conditions yields a Cartesian product. Inspect the execution plan for slow queries and test with realistic data volumes.
