Beginner Topic 9 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Pull Requests
Proposals to merge changes with discussion and review.
How it works
A pull request, or merge request, asks maintainers to merge a branch into another and provides a place for discussion. It shows the diff, commit list, automated check results and review comments, and reviewers can comment on lines, request changes or approve. Branch protection rules can require passing CI, a minimum number of approvals and up-to-date branches before merging. Good descriptions explain what changed and why, link the issue and say how it was tested. Forks let outside contributors propose changes without write access.
Where it is used
Pull requests are how open-source and company teams review code, share knowledge, catch bugs early and keep an audit trail of why each change was made.
Common pitfall
Giant pull requests are reviewed poorly, vague descriptions waste reviewer time, and treating review as criticism of the person creates friction. Keep changes small and focused, review the diff yourself first and respond to feedback promptly.
