Beginner Topic 7 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Git Basics

Distributed version control with commits.

How it works

Git is a distributed version control system that records snapshots of a project as commits. Files move between the working tree, the staging area and the repository: git add stages changes, git commit records them with a message and git log shows history. Each commit has a unique hash, a parent and an author, and git diff and git status show what changed. Remotes such as GitHub let git push and git pull share commits, and a .gitignore file keeps build output and secrets out of the repository. Because every clone holds full history, most operations work offline.

Where it is used

Developers use Git to track changes, undo mistakes, compare versions, collaborate without overwriting each other and tie releases to exact commits.

Common pitfall

Committing secrets or large binaries, making huge unfocused commits and rewriting shared history with force push cause lasting trouble. Commit small logical changes with clear messages, and remember that once a secret is pushed it must be rotated, not just deleted.
