Quantum Gates

Reversible operations acting on qubits.

How it works

Quantum gates are unitary operations on qubits, represented by matrices that preserve total probability and are always reversible. Single-qubit gates include X, which flips 0 and 1, Z, which flips the sign of the 1 amplitude, H, which creates superposition, and rotation gates by arbitrary angles. The two-qubit CNOT flips a target qubit when a control qubit is 1 and creates entanglement together with H. Toffoli and Fredkin gates act on three qubits. A circuit applies gates in sequence to qubits and ends with measurement, and small sets such as H, T and CNOT are universal, approximating any operation.

Where it is used

Gates are the building blocks of every quantum algorithm and of circuit design in toolkits such as Qiskit and Cirq.

Common pitfall

Real gates have errors, so deep circuits accumulate noise, and compiling to hardware connectivity adds extra operations. Keep circuits shallow and use error mitigation.

Where it fits in the course
