Beginner Topic 7 of 51 Databases
SQL Basics
Declarative language for querying relational data.
How it works
SQL, Structured Query Language, is the standard language for relational databases. Statements fall into groups: data definition such as CREATE, ALTER and DROP, data manipulation such as INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, querying with SELECT, and control commands such as GRANT and COMMIT. SQL is declarative: you describe what result you want, and the optimizer decides how to compute it. Dialects differ slightly across systems.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- You describe what you want, not how to get it.
- The database parses the SQL and builds a plan.
- The plan runs against tables and indexes.
- A table of rows returns.
- SQL has commands for querying, changing data and defining schema.
Where it is used
Reporting, application backends, analytics, migrations and data cleaning all use SQL. Knowing it lets you ask questions of data without writing loops.
Common pitfall
Thinking procedurally leads to row-by-row code where one set-based statement would be faster. NULL handling, implicit type conversion and differences between dialects cause surprises. Building queries by concatenating user input invites SQL injection; use parameters. Always test destructive statements on a copy and wrap them in transactions.
