Beginner Topic 3 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Android Basics

Activities, intents and the Android app model.

How it works

Android apps are built from components declared in the manifest: activities that present screens, services for background work, broadcast receivers for system events and content providers for sharing data. Modern development uses Kotlin with Jetpack libraries and Jetpack Compose for declarative UI, ViewModel and Room for architecture and persistence, and Gradle for builds. Intents launch components, and the system manages process lifecycle, killing background apps when memory is needed. Permissions are requested at runtime for sensitive features.

Where it is used

Phones, tablets, TVs, cars and wearables run Android, and developers publish through Google Play.

Common pitfall

Handling configuration changes such as rotation, process death and the lifecycle incorrectly causes lost state and crashes. Long work on the main thread freezes the UI and triggers Application Not Responding dialogs. Memory leaks from holding Activity references are common. Background restrictions and battery optimizations limit services, so use WorkManager. Test across API levels and device manufacturers.

Where it fits in the course
