Mobile Platforms Overview

Android and iOS ecosystems.

How it works

Mobile platforms are the operating systems and ecosystems for phones, tablets and wearables, dominated by Android, built on a Linux kernel with apps running on the Android Runtime, and iOS, built on a Darwin core with Swift and Objective-C frameworks. Each provides an SDK, UI toolkit, permission model, app sandbox, background execution rules, hardware access to sensors and cameras, and an app store for distribution. Apps are written natively, with cross-platform frameworks or as web apps and progressive web apps.

Where it is used

Consumer apps, banking, messaging, navigation, health tracking and enterprise tools target mobile platforms, and design must handle small screens, touch, intermittent connectivity and limited battery.

Common pitfall

Fragmentation of devices, OS versions and screen sizes on Android and strict review and policy changes on iOS add maintenance burden. Assuming desktop resources and constant connectivity leads to poor apps. Stay current with platform updates and deprecations, test on real devices and design for offline use and permission denial.
