Beginner Topic 2 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Mobile UI Principles
Designing for touch and small screens.
How it works
Mobile interface design follows principles shaped by small touch screens and usage on the go. Key ideas include prioritizing content and one primary action per screen, large touch targets of at least 44 to 48 points, thumb-friendly layouts, clear navigation patterns such as tab bars and navigation stacks, consistent gestures, immediate feedback, readable type and sufficient contrast, responsive layouts for varying sizes and orientations and accessibility with screen readers and dynamic text. Platform guidelines, Material Design and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, define conventions.
Where it is used
Every phone and tablet application applies these principles to make interfaces usable one-handed, fast and familiar.
Common pitfall
Cramped controls, hidden gestures without visible affordances, dense layouts and ignoring safe areas such as notches cause frustration. Copying desktop patterns, such as hover menus, fails on touch. Not handling the keyboard overlay, dark mode or slow networks with loading states hurts experience. Follow platform conventions, test with real users on real devices and design for interruptions.
