Advanced Topic 35 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Apache Kafka

Distributed log for high-throughput event streaming.

How it works

Apache Kafka is a distributed, durable, partitioned commit-log platform for streaming data. Producers append records to topics, which are split into partitions replicated across brokers; consumers in consumer groups read partitions in order and track their offsets, so many consumers can replay the same data independently. Retention is time or size based, and it provides high throughput with sequential disk I/O. Kafka Connect integrates external systems, Kafka Streams processes data, and transactions give exactly-once semantics within Kafka.

Where it is used

Event streaming backbones, log aggregation, change data capture, activity tracking, microservice event buses and real-time analytics use Kafka.

Common pitfall

Ordering is guaranteed only within a partition, so key choice matters, and too few partitions limit parallelism while too many add overhead. Consumer rebalances pause processing. Offsets and idempotency must be handled for at-least-once delivery. Operational complexity includes broker sizing, retention, schema evolution and monitoring lag. Use a schema registry and plan capacity.

Where it fits in the course
