Advanced Topic 36 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Apache Spark

In-memory engine for large-scale data processing.

How it works

Apache Spark is a unified engine for large-scale data processing that keeps data in memory across a cluster for speed. Its core abstraction, the resilient distributed dataset, is a partitioned, immutable collection with lineage information for recomputation, with higher-level DataFrame and SQL APIs optimized by the Catalyst planner and Tungsten engine. Libraries include Spark SQL, Structured Streaming, MLlib and GraphX. Transformations are lazy and build a DAG that executes when an action is called, with shuffles between stages.

Where it is used

ETL pipelines, interactive analytics, machine-learning workflows, graph processing and streaming jobs on data lakes use Spark through Python, Scala, Java or SQL.

Common pitfall

Shuffles and data skew are the main performance problems, along with too many small files, poor partitioning and memory pressure causing spills or out-of-memory errors. Python UDFs are slow compared with built-in functions. Collecting large results to the driver crashes it. Use the Spark UI to find slow stages, prefer DataFrame operations, tune partitions and broadcast small tables.

Where it fits in the course

Apache Spark is topic 36 of 51 in Distributed Systems & Cloud, rated Advanced. It follows Apache Kafka. The next topic is Service Discovery.
