Advanced Topic 37 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Service Discovery

Locating service instances dynamically.

How it works

Service discovery lets services find the network locations of other services in dynamic environments where instances start, stop and move. In client-side discovery, the client queries a registry such as Consul, etcd or Eureka and chooses an instance, while in server-side discovery a load balancer or proxy does so. Instances register themselves or are registered by the platform, health checks remove unhealthy ones and DNS-based discovery, as in Kubernetes Services and CoreDNS, offers a simple alternative.

Where it is used

Microservice architectures, container orchestrators and cloud-native applications use service discovery so that services call each other by name instead of fixed IPs.

Common pitfall

Stale registry entries send traffic to dead instances, and DNS caching and long TTLs delay updates. The registry itself must be highly available and consistent enough. Race conditions at startup and shutdown cause failed requests, so use readiness checks and graceful draining. Combine with retries and timeouts, and keep discovery configuration simple.

Where it fits in the course
