App Lifecycle

States an app moves through as users navigate.

How it works

The app lifecycle describes the states an application moves through as the user and system interact with it: launching, becoming active in the foreground, being interrupted by calls or other apps, going to the background, being suspended and possibly terminated by the system to reclaim memory. Platforms expose callbacks such as Android's onCreate, onStart, onResume, onPause, onStop and onDestroy, and iOS's scene and app delegate methods. Apps must save state and release resources at the right moments and restore them on return.

Where it is used

Saving drafts, pausing media and games, stopping location updates, refreshing data on resume and handling rotation and multi-window modes depend on lifecycle handling.

Common pitfall

The system can kill a background app without warning, so state kept only in memory is lost. Doing heavy work in lifecycle callbacks delays startup. Forgetting to unregister listeners leaks resources and battery. Rotation recreates activities on Android by default. Persist important state early, use lifecycle-aware components and test by killing the process.
