Beginner Topic 7 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Mobile Storage
Preferences, files and embedded databases on devices.
How it works
Mobile apps store data in several ways: key-value preferences for small settings, files in app-private directories and caches, structured databases such as SQLite, Room, Core Data and Realm, secure stores such as Android Keystore and the iOS Keychain for secrets and cloud sync through services such as Firebase, iCloud and custom back ends. Sandboxing keeps each app's data private, and scoped storage limits access to shared files. Storage quotas, backups and encryption at rest are platform features.
Where it is used
Caching content for offline use, user profiles, shopping carts, messages, media downloads and tokens all need appropriate storage.
Common pitfall
Storing secrets or tokens in plain preferences or files exposes them on rooted devices. Large caches without eviction fill the device and get the app flagged. Database operations on the main thread freeze the UI. Schema migrations between app versions can lose data if not planned. Choose storage by sensitivity and size, encrypt sensitive data and test upgrades.
