Push Notifications

Server-initiated messages delivered to devices.

How it works

Push notifications deliver messages to a device even when the app is not running. The app registers with the platform's service, Firebase Cloud Messaging for Android and Apple Push Notification service for iOS, obtains a device token and sends it to its back end; the server then sends payloads to the push service, which routes them to the device. Types include visible alerts, silent or data messages that wake the app briefly and rich notifications with actions and images. Users grant permission, and channels and categories give control.

Where it is used

Chat messages, order updates, news alerts, reminders and security prompts use push notifications to re-engage users.

Common pitfall

Delivery is best effort and not guaranteed, with delays and throttling by the OS. Tokens change and must be refreshed and invalid ones pruned. Overuse annoys users and leads to opt-outs or uninstalls. Sensitive content appears on lock screens, so avoid it. Silent pushes are limited on iOS. Respect permission, personalize carefully and offer fine-grained settings.
