Beginner Topic 14 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Arduino
Beginner-friendly microcontroller platform.
How it works
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform of beginner-friendly boards, commonly based on AVR or ARM microcontrollers, and a simple programming environment using a C++ dialect. A sketch has setup, which runs once, and loop, which runs repeatedly, with convenient functions such as pinMode, digitalWrite, analogRead and Serial. Shields and libraries provide ready-made support for sensors, displays, motors and networking, and a large community shares projects.
Where it is used
Prototyping, education, hobby robotics, home automation, art installations and quick proofs of concept use Arduino.
Common pitfall
Blocking delay calls stall everything else, so use millis-based timing for multitasking. Limited RAM causes crashes with large strings and arrays; use PROGMEM and avoid the String class fragmentation. Powering motors from the board's pins can damage it, so use drivers and external supplies. Missing common ground, wrong voltage levels and floating inputs cause erratic behavior. Move to professional toolchains for production designs.
