Beginner Topic 13 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Microcontrollers
Small single-chip computers for dedicated tasks.
How it works
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip, with a CPU core, memory (flash for program, SRAM for data), timers, communication interfaces and programmable input and output pins, designed to control a device. Common families include AVR in Arduino, ARM Cortex-M in STM32 and nRF, ESP32 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, PIC and RISC-V chips. They run at megahertz speeds with kilobytes to megabytes of memory, consume microwatts to milliwatts and often run bare-metal code or a small RTOS.
Where it is used
Appliances, car subsystems, toys, sensors, medical devices, industrial controllers and IoT nodes contain microcontrollers.
Common pitfall
Limited memory and no memory protection on small chips make bugs such as stack overflows and heap fragmentation dangerous. Peripherals have quirks documented in datasheets, so reading them is essential. Power and clock configuration mistakes cause odd behavior. Debugging needs a hardware probe. Choose the part by peripherals, power and cost, and keep firmware simple and testable.
