Beginner Topic 17 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Build Systems
Tools like Make that automate compiling.
How it works
A build system turns source files into runnable artifacts by running compilers, linkers, bundlers and tests in the right order. Make, the classic example, reads a Makefile of targets, dependencies and recipes, and rebuilds only targets whose inputs changed, judged by timestamps. Modern tools such as CMake, Gradle, Maven, Bazel and npm scripts model the dependency graph, run independent steps in parallel and cache results. Good builds are incremental, so small edits rebuild quickly, and deterministic, so the same inputs yield the same output.
Where it is used
Every project uses one to compile code, bundle front ends, generate documentation, run tests and package releases locally and in CI.
Common pitfall
Missing dependencies in the graph cause stale outputs, so people run clean builds on habit, and builds depending on the developer's machine fail elsewhere. Declare every input explicitly, avoid hidden network access and keep build steps scriptable.
