Beginner Topic 8 of 49 Graphics, Vision & Media

Coordinate Systems

Cartesian spaces used to position graphics.

How it works

A coordinate system assigns numbers to positions in space. Cartesian coordinates use perpendicular axes, polar coordinates use distance and angle, and 3D adds cylindrical and spherical systems. Graphics works with several spaces: model or object space, world space, view or camera space, clip space, normalized device coordinates and screen space, and transformations convert among them. Conventions differ: screen coordinates often put the origin at the top-left with y pointing down, while math puts it at the bottom-left, and 3D can be right-handed or left-handed.

Where it is used

Rendering, games, mapping, robotics and CAD all rely on consistent coordinate conventions, with geographic coordinates adding latitude, longitude and projections.

Common pitfall

Mixing conventions, such as y-up versus y-down, left versus right handedness and degrees versus radians, causes flipped or mirrored results. Applying transformations in the wrong order gives wrong positions. Precision loss far from the origin causes jitter. Document conventions and keep transformation chains explicit.
