Intermediate Topic 22 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Deployment Strategies

Blue-green, canary and rolling releases.

How it works

A deployment strategy defines how a new version replaces the old. A recreate deployment stops the old version and starts the new, accepting downtime. A rolling deployment replaces instances a few at a time. Blue-green keeps two full environments and switches traffic from blue to green at once, allowing instant rollback. A canary sends a small share of traffic to the new version and increases it while watching error rates and latency. Shadow deployments mirror traffic to a new version without exposing results, and feature flags separate release from deploy. Load balancers and orchestrators implement the traffic shifting.

Where it is used

Companies use them to release without downtime, limit the number of users hit by a bad release and verify changes under real traffic.

Common pitfall

Database schema changes that break the old version make rollback impossible, and canaries without good metrics prove nothing. Use backward-compatible migrations, health checks and automatic rollback on error thresholds.
