Intermediate Topic 23 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Docker Images and Layers
Immutable layered filesystems for containers.
How it works
A Docker image is a read-only template holding a filesystem and metadata used to start containers. It is built from a Dockerfile, and each instruction such as FROM, COPY and RUN creates a layer identified by a content hash. Layers are stacked with a union filesystem, shared between images and cached, so rebuilds reuse unchanged layers, and a container adds a thin writable layer on top. Images are stored in registries and referenced by name and tag or by immutable digest. Multi-stage builds compile in one stage and copy only the result into a small final image.
Where it is used
Images package an application with its dependencies so it runs the same on a laptop, in CI and in production.
Common pitfall
Ordering instructions badly invalidates the cache, secrets copied into a layer remain in history, large base images slow deployment and the latest tag is not reproducible. Put rarely changing steps first, use small base images and pin versions.
