Intermediate Topic 24 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Docker Compose
Defining multi-container apps in a file.
How it works
Docker Compose describes a multi-container application in a YAML file, usually compose.yaml. Each service lists an image or build context, ports, environment variables, volumes, dependencies and health checks, and Compose also creates a shared network where services reach each other by service name. docker compose up starts everything in order, down removes it and logs shows combined output. Named volumes keep data such as a database between restarts, and profiles and override files adapt the setup for development or testing.
Where it is used
Developers use it to run an app with its database, cache and message broker locally with one command, and CI jobs use it for integration tests.
Common pitfall
depends_on controls start order but not readiness, so apps still fail when the database is not yet accepting connections. Compose is meant for single hosts, not production clusters. Add health checks, keep secrets out of the file and use Kubernetes for multi-node scale.
