Digital Twins

Virtual replicas of physical systems kept in sync.

How it works

A digital twin is a virtual model of a physical object, system or process that is kept synchronized with it through data from sensors, enabling monitoring, simulation, prediction and optimization. It combines a data model of the asset, real-time telemetry via IoT platforms, physics-based or machine-learning models and visualization, and can feed decisions back to the physical system. Twins range from a single machine to whole factories, buildings or cities, and platforms include Azure Digital Twins and Siemens and GE offerings.

Where it is used

Predictive maintenance of turbines and engines, factory optimization, smart building energy management, supply chain simulation, healthcare organ models and urban planning use digital twins.

Common pitfall

A twin is only as good as its data and models: stale or inaccurate synchronization leads to wrong conclusions. Building high-fidelity models is expensive, and integration with legacy systems is hard. Define the purpose and required fidelity first, validate the model against real behavior continuously, and secure data flows.

Where it fits in the course

Digital Twins is topic 50 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Real-Time Constraints and Scheduling. It is the last topic in this area.
