Real-Time Constraints and Scheduling

Hard deadlines and schedulability analysis.

How it works

Real-time systems must produce correct results within deadlines. Hard real-time means missing a deadline is a failure, as in airbags, while soft real-time tolerates occasional misses, as in video playback. Tasks are described by period, execution time and deadline. Scheduling policies include fixed-priority rate-monotonic scheduling, where shorter periods get higher priority, and dynamic earliest-deadline-first scheduling. Schedulability tests, such as the Liu and Layland utilization bound of about 69 percent for rate-monotonic, check feasibility, and worst-case execution time analysis bounds task run times.

Where it is used

Flight control, automotive safety, industrial control, medical devices and audio processing apply real-time scheduling analysis.

Common pitfall

Average performance is irrelevant; worst-case behavior matters, including interrupts, cache effects, blocking on shared resources and priority inversion. Overloaded systems miss deadlines unpredictably. Dynamic memory, unbounded loops and unpredictable libraries violate timing guarantees. Use priority inheritance, measure worst-case times with margins, keep a spare utilization budget and design for graceful degradation.
