Smart Home Systems

Connected devices automating living spaces.

How it works

Smart home systems connect devices such as lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, speakers and appliances so they can be monitored and controlled remotely and automated by rules. Devices communicate over Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and Bluetooth, and the Matter standard aims for interoperability across ecosystems from Apple, Google and Amazon. A hub or cloud service coordinates devices, apps provide control, and voice assistants add natural interaction, with automations triggered by schedules, sensors and presence.

Where it is used

Energy saving, security monitoring, convenience scenes, elderly care and remote property management use smart home systems; open-source platforms such as Home Assistant allow local control.

Common pitfall

Fragmented ecosystems and protocols cause compatibility problems, and cloud-dependent devices stop working when the vendor's service ends. Weak passwords, outdated firmware and exposed devices create privacy and security risks. Wireless congestion and reliability matter for locks and alarms. Prefer local control, secure networks with separate VLANs, update firmware and choose standards-based devices.

Where it fits in the course

Smart Home Systems is topic 46 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Automotive Software. The next topic is Wearable Computing.
