Edge Computing for Web

Running code at network edges close to users.

How it works

Edge computing for the web runs code on servers located near users, in CDN points of presence, instead of in a central region. Platforms such as Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge Functions and Deno Deploy execute lightweight functions, often with V8 isolates that start in milliseconds, to handle routing, personalization, authentication, A/B testing, header rewriting, caching and API aggregation with low latency. Edge key-value stores and databases replicate data globally.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Code runs in data centres close to users.
  2. A request reaches the nearest edge location.
  3. The function can personalize, redirect or authenticate in milliseconds.
  4. It serves cached content when possible.
  5. Only misses travel to the origin.

Where it is used

Fast personalized responses, redirects, geolocation-based content, bot protection and server-side rendering close to users use edge functions.

Common pitfall

Runtime limits on CPU time, memory, supported APIs and package compatibility restrict what code can run. Data consistency is harder when data is replicated, and calls back to a distant database erase latency gains. Debugging and observability across many locations take effort. Keep edge logic small, cache aggressively and place data near the code that uses it.

Where it fits in the course
