Advanced Topic 35 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Edge Computing
Processing data near where it is generated.
How it works
Edge computing processes data close to where it is generated, on devices, gateways or local servers, instead of sending everything to a distant cloud. This reduces latency, saves bandwidth, allows operation during connectivity loss, improves privacy by keeping raw data local and enables real-time decisions. Architectures often combine device, edge and cloud tiers, with the cloud handling training, aggregation and long-term storage. Orchestration uses containers and lightweight Kubernetes distributions at the edge.
Where it is used
Video analytics at cameras, industrial predictive maintenance, autonomous vehicles, retail systems, content delivery and smart grids use edge computing.
Common pitfall
Managing and securing many distributed nodes is harder than a central data center, with limited hardware and physical access risks. Updates, monitoring and consistency across sites need automation. Partitioning work between edge and cloud requires thought about data flow. Keep edge software small and robust, encrypt data and design for intermittent connectivity.
