Firmware Updates

Over-the-air or wired software updates for devices.

How it works

Firmware updates let manufacturers fix bugs, patch vulnerabilities and add features to deployed devices. Over-the-air updates download images over Wi-Fi, cellular or Bluetooth, verify integrity with hashes and authenticity with digital signatures, and then write them with the bootloader, often using dual partitions: the new image is written to the inactive slot, the device reboots into it and rolls back automatically if it fails to confirm a healthy boot. Delta updates reduce size, and staged rollouts limit risk.

Where it is used

Smartphones, routers, cars, smart home devices and industrial equipment receive updates in the field.

Common pitfall

A failed or interrupted update can brick devices, so power-loss safety, atomic switching and rollback are essential. Unsigned or unencrypted updates are a major security hole. Version compatibility and anti-rollback protection need design. Limited bandwidth and memory complicate updates. Test update paths from every released version, monitor update success rates and keep the update mechanism itself updatable.
