Intermediate Topic 31 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
IoT Architecture
Devices, gateways and cloud in connected systems.
How it works
An IoT architecture connects physical devices to cloud services in layers. The device layer has sensors, actuators and microcontrollers; the connectivity layer uses Wi-Fi, cellular, BLE, Zigbee, LoRaWAN or Ethernet, often through a gateway that bridges protocols; the platform layer ingests data through brokers using MQTT or CoAP, stores time-series data, manages device identity, provisioning and updates; and the application layer provides analytics, dashboards, rules and integrations. Edge computing processes data near the source to cut latency and bandwidth.
Where it is used
Smart homes, industrial monitoring, agriculture, logistics tracking, smart cities and healthcare monitoring follow this pattern, with platforms such as AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub and open-source stacks.
Common pitfall
Security is the biggest risk: default passwords, unpatched firmware and unencrypted traffic led to botnets such as Mirai. Scale brings device management challenges. Intermittent connectivity needs buffering. Choose protocols for power and range, give each device unique credentials and plan for lifecycle management.
