MQTT
Lightweight publish-subscribe protocol for IoT.
How it works
MQTT is a lightweight publish-subscribe messaging protocol designed for constrained devices and unreliable networks, running over TCP. Clients connect to a broker, publish messages to hierarchical topics such as home/livingroom/temperature and subscribe with wildcards. Quality of service levels give at most once, at least once or exactly once delivery, retained messages store the last value for new subscribers, last will and testament messages announce unexpected disconnects and persistent sessions queue messages for offline clients. Brokers include Mosquitto, EMQX and HiveMQ.
Where it is used
IoT telemetry, home automation, mobile messaging, industrial monitoring and vehicle data use MQTT for its small overhead and simplicity.
Common pitfall
Topics without a clear naming scheme become unmanageable, and subscribing to everything overloads clients. QoS 2 costs extra round trips, and clients must handle duplicates at QoS 1. Brokers need authentication, TLS and access control lists, since open brokers are widely abused. Keep payloads small, use keep-alives and plan for broker scaling and clustering.
